Air Rifles

Question: Is my air rifle de-regulated?
Answer: All air rifles with a calibre smaller than .22 are de-regulated and no longer require a licence.

Question: My air rifle is now de-regulated - must I cancel my licence?
Answer: No, it is not necessary to do this.

Firearm Licences

Question: What format of firearm licence is valid?
Answer:
Firearm licences come in two valid formats (1) in your Identity Book and (2) as a laminated card.

Question: Must I change my firearm licence in my ID book to the card format?
Answer: No, the licence in your ID book is valid. Because the licence system is due to change soon the SAPS will not issue licences in the card format unless your ID book is stolen.

Question: What if my ID book with my firearm licence in it is stolen?
Answer: You will need to apply at your nearest police station for a replacement licence. This will be in the card format and you will have to pay a fee. See Schedule of fees on the Notices page.

Change of Address

Question: As a firearm owner, who do I notify of a change in address details?
Answer: Firearm owners who change their postal or physical address must inform the Central Firearms Register within 30 days of his/her new details. Once the CFR receive your notice they must, in writing, confirm receipt thereof.

Question: What form do I use and where do I get it from?
Answer: The form is SAPS 521(b) "Notification of Change of Address" and it is available online from the SAPS website at www.saps.gov.za or from your local police station.
Once you have completed the form you need to submit it to the Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) at your nearest police station. You will also have to submit a copy of your identity document and a copy of an account such as lights, water, etc, posted to your new address (to prove you do live there). The DFO should do a safe inspection at the new address but this does not always happen.
